AYC is a term found on welfare records. It stands for Adelaide Youth Court. The Adelaide Youth Court comprises a court and a conferencing unit. The court hears criminal trials and pleas for children and young people under the age of 18 years. It also deals with child protection applications and applications for the adoption of children. The conferencing unit conducts family conferences for young offenders and family care meetings related to child protection. The first separate youth or children's court in South Australia was established under the provisions of the State Children's Act 1895 which called for a separate room to be used for hearings or trials which involved children.
