The Sisters of Mercy, Goulburn Congregation started in 1859, with the arrival of Mother Ignatius Murphy and a team of sisters. They moved into their convent in 1863. The Goulburn Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy was created in 1907, with the amalgamation of the Goulburn foundation (1859) with those in Albury (1868) and Yass (1875). The Sisters of Mercy were responsible for the administration of several children's homes owned by the Catholic Diocese of Goulburn including St Joseph's Orphanage, 1864-1975 and St John's Home, Goulburn, 1905-1975 which amalgamated into St John's Home, Auburn Street in 1975. On 12 December 2011 this congregation became part of the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of Australia and Papua New Guinea.
