- Care Provider
- Care provider is an umbrella term that refers to the group or organisation responsible for providing and administering out-of-home 'care' for children. Although this term was not in common usage before the late twentieth century, this website applies it to describe all organisations which operated 'care' services, no matter when they were active.

- City Mission
- City Mission refers to the missions run by various Christian denominations in urban and suburban settings. In the nineteenth century, working class communities in the inner city were seen as 'dark' and 'foreign', and thus an appropriate field for mission. The care of children and unmarried mothers was an important area of activity for these missions. The first half of the twentieth century saw an expansion of denominationally based mission activity, with many inner-suburban churches reconstituting themselves as mission districts. In the postwar period, missions took on a more secular role, and were important providers of child welfare services.

Although they are private organisations, they may receive some funding from government to provide particular services. In New South Wales, Community Service Organisations tend to refer to themselves as Non-Government Organisations (NGOs).
