Records of Mt Maria, Home of the Good Shepherd is a collection relating to the Good Shepherd Home for Girls (also known as the Industrial School for Girls, Mitchelton, 1933-1966), the Mt Maria Re-education Centre (1966-1973) and the Mt Maria Youth Centre (1973-1974).

Access Conditions

Care leavers (and their families) wanting to find information about their time in care, or access personal files can contact Good Shepherd Archive.

All requests for personal information must be accompanied by some form of personal identification such as a copy of your birth certificate or a copy of your current driver's licence. If you are applying for information about another person, their permission is required. If you are applying for information about a person who is deceased, proof of death is required. Proof of your relationship to the deceased person is also required.

Records

The Good Shepherd Archive has advised that the following records exist in relation to this Home:

  • Register of Persons in Care 1931 to 1974: This ledger contains brief information on admissions and discharges - name, date of birth, name of parents, to whom discharged etc.
  • Admissions and Discharges Day Book 1952 to 1974: This small book records the names of girls admitted and discharged.
  • Registration Forms: Register of Children in an Institution 1965 to 1974.
  • Birth certificates of 3 persons formerly in care 1952 to 1954.

Supplementary records include:

  • Admission registration cards, c.1960 to 1975
  • Certificates of baptism, c.1942 to 1974.

Contextual records at Good Shepherd Archive include histories, newsclipping collection and photographs of the site and buildings.
