From
c. 1984
To

Categories
Government-run, Home and Residential Care

Brookway Unit was a government-run residential care unit for up to eight children. It opened in the mid-1980s at Campbelltown. Its location suggests that it was on the former site of Brookway Park and may have been the new name for the last remaining unit at that site, Ningana Community Unit. Existing records suggest that it closed in 1992.

Details

Brookway Unit was a government-run residential care unit which opened in the mid-1980s at Campbelltown. Its location in that suburb suggests that it may have been on the former site of Brookway Park which closed in 1979, with the exception of one unit, the Ningana Community Unit. Brookway Park may have been the new name for this last remaining unit. If Brookway Unit replaced Ningana, it is likely to also have been a Community Unit. More research is required to confirm this connection.

During the 1970s and into the 1980s, the department used smaller residential care units for State children rather than large institutions. Each metropolitan region had a number of units which were used for different purposes. Admission Units provided short term crisis care; Assessment Units were used for teenage young offenders and other units provided therapeutic care for children with specific needs. Finally Community Units provided longer term care and also assisted young people to move gradually back into the community. Units generally accommodated up to eight children.

Current research suggests that the Brookway Unit closed in 1992.
