Glossary Term

A temperance pledge was a signed agreement not to drink alcohol. It was commonly used by Christian organisations in the 1950s. Many children in government Homes and reformatories were encouraged to sign a pledge in this era. The Band of Hope, an organisation founded in the UK in 1847 developed this pledge which was continued and adapted by Christian temperance organisations through to the 1950s.
