The Children, Young Persons and Their Families Amendment Act 2009 (Act No.22/2009) amended the Children, Young Persons and Their Families Act 1997, following on from the release in 2006 of the 'Report on Child Protection Services in Tasmania'.

Details

The key amendments made to the Children, Young Persons and Their Families Act in the 2009 legislation were:

  • the ability for mandatory reporters to report concerns about the care of children within their family to non-government Gateway Services
  • broader powers allowing the sharing of information relevant to the best interests of a child
  • the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services able to receive information relating to unborn children
  • greater options for permanent care arrangements in some cases
  • the creation of an Ashley Youth Detention Centre Residents' Advocate.
