The Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of Australia (ISMA) was formed in 1981 from the 17 Australian congregations of the Religious Sisters of Mercy, including the Melbourne congregation. The formation of ISMA was intended to foster unity among the various congregations, each of which retained its independence within the Institute as a whole. In 2011, the members of ISMA, including the congregation from the region of Papua New Guinea, amalgamated to form one congregation called the Institute of Sisters of Mercy of Australia and Papua New Guinea.
