The Adelaide Kids Shelter opened in Archer street, North Adelaide in January 1976. It was run by a community based organisational committee. The shelter provided accommodation and therapeutic support mainly for adolescent girls aged between 12 and 18. It took in a small number of boys.
The shelter provided long term care for up to five children under the supervision of four resident staff who were trained social workers. At the end of 1982 the shelter relocated to a house provided by the South Australian Housing Trust at Kilkenny. During the 2004-2008 Children in State Care Commission of Inquiry, the Adelaide Kids Shelter came under scrutiny in relation to an allegation of abuse at the Shelter. The exact closing date for the Adelaide Kids Shelter is unknown.
