Summary
Laroona Family Group Home, which was in Battery Point, a suburb of Hobart, was run by the government. It probably opened in the mid 1980s. The Home provided temporary accommodation in a domestic environment for children in the 'care' of the Department of Community Welfare and its successors. Laroona closed in about 2009.

Details
A married woman managed Laroona Family Group Home with the assistance of her husband, who was in paid employment outside the Home. In return, they received free accommodation.
The Home provided 'care' for new wards of the state or children on remand from the courts until the Department found a more permanent placement for them. It also took in children requiring temporary 'care' and in transit between homes. Some children stayed in the home longer if they got on well with the 'carer'.
The Listen to the Children report of 2004 mentions Laroona.
