In August 1934, the New Town Infirmary became the New Town Rest Home. The name change was the government's attempt to avoid the stigma of poverty associated with the institution. It provided temporary accommodation to state wards and permanent accommodation for people who were elderly and infirm, with chronic illnesses, or who were certified under the Mental Deficiency Act 1920 and living in the Mental Defectives Home. By 1944, New Town Rest Home had become St John's Park, New Town.
