Summary
Reverend Mother Superior (Mary Cecilia) Xavier Maguire led the establishment of a community of the Sisters of Mercy in Geelong. The order arrived in Geelong from Dublin on 3 December 1859 and within a year had established a convent, orphanage, boarding and day school, industrial school, and farmlet. Reverend Mother Xavier Maquire was mother superior of the convent for twenty years.
Details
On September 5, 1859, Mother Xavier, accompanied by Sister Margaret Mullally, Gabriel Sherlock, and Regis Manly, set sail from Dublin in response to a request from the Archbishop of Melbourne, Dr. Goold, for the Sisters of Mercy to establish a presence in Geelong.
