- The Stolen Generations: A Documentary Collection
- The Monthly
- Online document only, 3 September 2006
On 3 September 2006, the Melbourne Writers' Festival debated the issue of the stolen generations. Professor of Politics at La Trobe University, Robert Manne, prepared some background materials.
In his opening statements to the Documentary Collection, Manne explained its purpose:
For several years Andrew Bolt has been informing his readers in the Melbourne Herald Sun that the claim that between 1900 and 1970 thousands of mixed descent aboriginal children were removed from their mothers, families and communities involuntarily and without justifiable cause for racist reasons is an un-Australian, left-wing myth.
This collection is based on a selection of documents in government archives and some representative testimonies from those who experienced the removals directly. Its purpose is to allow those attending the debate to assess Bolt's claim.
An index arranges the material in the Documentary Collection by State/Territory. Entries relating to Western Australia run from page 84 to page 133 and provide some powerful examples of the attitudes towards and practices associated with the removal of children. Some names and details of children are also included.
