Summary

The Methodist Children's Home opened in 1922 on a property in Sussex Street, East Victoria Park. It was the first child care institution that was run by the Methodist Homes for Children, which was part of the Methodist Church in Western Australia. Over time, a number of cottages were built on the site: Mofflyn House (1925), Wesley, Guild, Dowerin and Meckering (1952).

In 1959 the Methodist Children's Home became known as 'Mofflyn House' which quickly became shortened to 'Mofflyn'.

Records
The Methodist Homes for Children ran the Methodist Children's Home at East Victoria Park until the Uniting Church was formed in 1977. For assistance with records for agencies and services pre-dating the amalgamation of the Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational churches, please refer to contact details for UnitingCare West and the Uniting Church Synod of Western Australia archives.

Departmental case records for young people placed in the Methodist Children's Home by the Child Welfare Department may be held by 'Freedom of Information' in the Department for Child Protection.

Access While access to records is restricted to protect the privacy of individuals, people are encouraged to enquire.

  • Freedom of Information, Department for Child Protection WA

Freedom of Information encourages people to search for their records. However, they do ask people to be aware that files 'can be limited in the amount and type of information they hold. This is because the information which was recorded depended on the extent of contact with the person or the family. Sometimes records are incomplete, have pages missing or the writing has deteriorated and is unreadable, and some files have been destroyed. The Department is making every effort to preserve the remaining records.'

  • NCH Action for Children (1869 - )
  • Werribee Farm School (1929 - 1962)

The Werribee Farm School ('Allandale') and the Methodist Home for Children at East Victoria Park were run by the Methodist Homes for Children. At times, there was quite a lot of contact between them and children (particularly boys) often lived in both Homes.
