Summary

There is little known about the Oddfellows' Orphanage but there were discussions as early as 1904 regarding raising funds to build a children's home in Cottesloe, primarily for 'the maintenance of the children of late members of the Society. In 1914 there is documented evidence of a 'Bazaar' being held to raise money to clear the debt on building the orphanage. The Annual Reports of the Child Welfare Department from 1935 to 1940 showed the Independent Order of Oddfellows Orphanage as being licensed to care for children under six years of age, who were not on a Departmental subsidy. The number of children reported in each of these years in this category was: 1935: 1 child; 1936: 6 children; 1937: 3 children; 1938-40: 1 child in each year.

Records
No records are known to exist, however the Battye Library is always a good starting place for information about Western Australian history.

The Department for Child Protection may have information about people who believe they were residents of the Orphanage.

The Independent Order of Oddfellows still exists as an organisation, but no longer operates a residential child care facility. It is unknown whether they hold any relevant records.

Freedom of Information encourages people to search for their records. However, they do ask people to be aware that files 'can be limited in the amount and type of information they hold. This is because the information which was recorded depended on the extent of contact with the person or the family. Sometimes records are incomplete, have pages missing or the writing has deteriorated and is unreadable, and some files have been destroyed. The Department is making every effort to preserve the remaining records.'
