This Series, Private Adoption files [Dependent Children and Adoptions Branch, Department of Community Services], is held by the State Records Authority of New South Wales. However people wishing to access the records in this series will need to contact the Adoption Information Unit. The Adoption Information Unit (AIU) is part of the New South Wales state government department of Family and Community Services and provides adoption information and support for individuals and their families in relation to adoptions in New South Wales and Intercountry adoptions that involve New South Wales.
The records in this series are mostly reports by the Department sent to the Chief Justice in Equity. The reports include basic information about the applicants who wish to adopt such as their names, education, family situation, their home, occupation and financial situation. These reports may also contain some information on the child the applicants wish to adopt such as name and date of birth.
Presumably these reports were used to make decisions about whether to proceed with an adoption. The reports are based on District Officers reports which are far more comprehensive particularly in regard to information about the birth families and individuals who may be adopted.
