Rainbow Lodge was in the former Haddon Hall buildings. These had been owned by Japanese businessman and vice-consul Toransuki Kitamura, who had bought them and built the bungalow 'Yama' before his death in 1930. The Sydney City Mission bought them and ran 'Haddon Hall' on the site until 1967.
Rainbow Lodge was described as a children's home in a 1979 Commonwealth Government report called Why are they in children's homes: report of the ACOSS children's home intake survey.
