On 27 Oct 1892, Friday Island, Torres Strait, was proclaimed a lazaret under the provisions of the Leprosy Act of 1892. It was established for the treatment of non-European patients. In 1907 Friday Island Lazaret was closed and patients were transferred to a new lazaret for both non-European and European patients on Peel Island, Moreton Bay.
It has not been determined whether children suffering from leprosy were sent to Friday Island.
