The Maternity Home Brisbane was run by the Salvation Army. The home provided care and accommodation for single pregnant girls and young mothers and their babies. It opened in 1892 at Upper Edward Street, Brisbane. In 1895 a gas leak caused an explosion at the home, injuring a staff member, and blowing out the door and destroying the contents of a room. In 1896 the home moved to a newly leased property at the corner of Greggory Terrace and Brookes Street, Bowen Hills. This home was significantly larger than the Edward Street property, and allowed for an expansion of the home's operations. The new building had capacity for up to 25 mothers, as well as a six-room cottage behind the home which was intended to act as a separate home for up to 20 children. In 1897 the Home moved again to Breakfast Creek, and became known as the Salvation Army Maternity Home Breakfast Creek.
