Adelaide Youth Training Centre

The government-run Adelaide Youth Training Centre opened at Cavan in 2012. It replaced the Magill Training Centre and Cavan Training Centre as a secure institution for young offenders. The Centre focuses on education and rehabilitation for young men and women aged between 10 and 18 who are on remand and detention warrants. The Centre accommodates up to 96 young people in two campuses. The Adelaide Youth Training Centre continued to operate in 2013.

The Adelaide Youth Training Centre opened at Cavan in September 2012. Run by the government it replaced both the Magill Training Centre and Cavan Training Centre as a two campus, secure institution for young offenders. One of the campuses was previously the former Cavan Training Centre at 1 Jonal Drive, Cavan, and the other was purpose built at 25-56 Goldsborough Road, Cavan.

The new Centre was described in 2012 as a place to show young people ‘a new way’. The focus of the Centre is on providing a safe, secure environment providing education and rehabilitation for young people who have committed crimes.

At the opening of the new Centre, the Guardian for Children commented on the appearance of the new building:

A good physical environment makes a big difference because it tells young people, and the staff, that we do respect them…Magill screamed at you humiliation and disrespect, whereas this environment tells you more about education, rehabilitation and respect, and it makes a big difference.

The Adelaide Youth Training Centre is divided into two campuses. The Jonal Drive facility provides accommodation for up to 36 young people in four units. Three of the units are for young people arrested by the police and young boys aged between 10 and 14 who are on remand or detention. A fourth unit houses young men who are moving back into the community.

The second facility at Goldsborough Road provides accommodation for up to 60 young people in five units. These are divided between girls aged 10 to 18 and young men aged 15 and over, all of whom who are on remand or detention warrants.

The Adelaide Youth Training Centre continued to operate in 2013.
