The Children and Young People (Safety) Act 2017 introduced changes to how Care Leavers are provided with access to records held by the state government. Care Leavers previously had to apply for records under the Freedom of Information Act 1991.
Under section 153 of the Act, a person who was in state care (and if the person has died, their grandparent, parent, child or grandchild) is eligible to request documents held by the department, and to receive original and copies of documents free of charge.
