The barque Loch Ryan was purchased in 1909, converted for training purposes at Williamstown and renamed John Murray. James Boyd MLA for Melbourne initiated the project, but it attracted controversy over the reported treatment of the trainees. A total of 411 boys underwent training, but fewer than 20 per cent qualified to join other ships.
