In September 1940, the position of Inspector General of the Insane was removed from the Public Service Act and placed under the Lunacy Act 1903. When the position was reclassified as Inspector General for Mental Hospitals in 1947, it was replaced under the Public Service Act, giving direct access to the Minister for Health.
