Inspector General of Mental Hospitals was a position responsible for mental health hospitals and services in Western Australia from 1947 to 1966. During these years children with intellectual and other disabilities were often placed in mental health institutions.

In September 1940, the position of Inspector General of the Insane was removed from the Public Service Act and placed under the Lunacy Act 1903. When the position was reclassified as Inspector General for Mental Hospitals in 1947, it was replaced under the Public Service Act, giving direct access to the Minister for Health.
