On 6 December 2010, the Senate’s Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee released its report from the Review of Government Compensation Payments. The review began in February 2010, and the Committee received 185 submissions from members of the public.

Recommendations from the December 2010 report included that the state governments of Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia review their redress and compensation schemes for children in institutional care.

The report also recommended that the states that have not yet established redress schemes, New South Wales and Victoria, do so to compensate people who experienced abuse or neglect while in ‘care’.

The Committee also recommended that the Australian government pursue all available policy and political options to ensure the establishment of redress schemes in NSW and Victoria, and reviews of existing schemes to ensure consistency.
