Tasmania’s Abuse in Care Review Program to close next month
Tasmanian Minister for Children, Michelle O’Byrne, has urged any remaining individuals who suffered abuse while in state care to come forward before the successful redress scheme closes to new applicants next month.
Ms O’Byrne said that Tasmanian Government’s landmark Abuse in Care Review Program had spanned nine years over four rounds and paid out more than $52 million in ex gratia payments.
“In that time, more than 1600 people who suffered abuse in government care as children have had their pain and suffering recognised and received ex gratia payments.”
Applications under the scheme must be received before 15 February 2013. A counselling and support service will be available for eligible individuals who wish to seek help after the Program closes.
