Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse (2012 - )

From
2012

On 12 November 2012, the Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced the creation of a national Royal Commission into institutional responses to instances of child sexual abuse. In 2014 the Royal Commission was still hearing submissions.

Details

The Royal Commission will:

  • Inquire into how institutions with a responsibility for children have managed and responded to allegations and instances of child sexual abuse
  • Investigate where systems have failed to protect children
  • Make recommendations on how to improve laws, policies and practices to prevent and better respond to child sexual abuse in institutions

The Commissioners are to look at any private, public or non-government organisation that is, or was in the past, involved with children (including government agencies, schools, sporting clubs, orphanages, foster care, and religious organisations) if they believe an organisation is responsible for the abuse or for not responding appropriately, regardless of where or when the abuse took place.

In 2014 the Royal Commission held a public hearing in Sydney to examine The Salvation Army's response to child sexual abuse at boys' homes in Indooroopilly, Riverview, Bexley and Goulburn.
