Details

The Campbelltown Community Unit, also known as Cornerways opened in 1995. It was a purpose-built government community unit, taking in up to eight children.

Community Units provided longer term residential care for children from the age of eight up to the upper teens. Sometimes children of different ages were placed in the same unit. Children placed in community units might be young people on remand or children who were deemed to be at risk. Community units were also used at times to assist young people to move back into the community.

Cornerways was one of the institutions that came under scrutiny for allegations of abuse during the Children in State Care Inquiry 2004-2008. Information from one witness revealed that children could remain in the unit for periods as long as three years and that absconding from the unit was a common problem.

Cornerways was still operating at the time of the publication of the Children in State Care Inquiry Final Report in 2008.
