The Southern Region Group Home was the new name given to the Merrilama Cottage at Glenelg in 1979. Run by the government, it accommodated up to eight teenage young offenders. In 1981 the Group Home moved to Glandore. The Southern Region Group Home was renamed the Glandore Community Unit in 1990.
The Southern Region Group Home was the new name given to the Merrilama Cottage at 36 Gordon Street, Glenelg, in 1979. Run by the Department for Community Welfare, the Group Home accommodated up to eight teenage young offenders who were deemed as requiring therapeutic care.
After the passing of the 1972 Community Welfare Act, the welfare department was restructured and the management of residential care was decentralised. The metropolitan area was divided into regions and each region was provided with a similar group of facilities for smaller group care. In keeping with a new focus on assessment of children after they were admitted into care and developing individual programs for children, each region had an Admission Unit, a Community Unit and a Group Home. Group Homes usually accommodated older children for longer periods of time.
In 1981 the Southern Region Group Home was moved from Glenelg to 58 Pleasant Avenue, Glandore, on the site of the former Pleasant Avenue Cottage.
In 1990 the Southern Region Group Home was renamed the Glandore Community Unit.
