The Aboriginal Child Placement Principle, a nationally agreed policy since 1977, became a practice of the Department of Community Welfare in 1984. It was intended to strengthen Aboriginal children's connections with their family, community, and cultural identity.
Section 9 of the 1997 Children, Young Persons and their Families Act follows the principle of Aboriginal Child Placement Principle.
