Residential care, as distinct from home based care, involves the placement of children, twelve years old and younger, who have 'challenging behaviours' or need extra support, in small residential units. The staff are specifically trained to care for them. Anglicare Victoria and Tasmania run these units in the north of the state and the Salvation Army Tasmania and the Salvation Army Westcare in the south.
