Access Conditions

Closed D75 years
D75 means that records in this series that have final entries less than 75 years old are closed to the general public. People wishing to access these records should contact Mental Health Services which is in the Department of Health and Human Services. Staff at the Tasmanian Archive and Heritage Office may be able to assist you in finding other relevant records.

Records

The records contain personal details, previous medical history, and details of treatment while in Lachlan Park and Millbrook Rise Psychopathic Hospitals. The Tasmanian Archive and Heritage Office website lists the names of patients whose records are on open access because they are more than 75 years old.

Initially patients' notes were kept in bound case books on the ward. In the 1930s, the notes were removed from these bound case books and placed in separate volumes according to whether the patient was male or female and then discharged or deceased. Later these records were kept in a single alphabetical order.

The records are organised in two consignments that reflect these differing approaches to organisation. The first is Consignment One which is organised alphabetically with only one sequence of names. Consignment Two has the following categories:

  • Females discharged - 1-388
  • Females deceased - 399-968
  • Males discharged - 969-1340
  • Males deceased - 1341-1817
