The Perth Gazette and Western Australian Journal published this letter from Charles Symmons, Protector of Natives, to the Colonial Secretary, describing his investigation into the death of a six year old boy at the 'native school' in Fremantle. Symmons found that the roof of the school 'needs immediate and substantial repair.'
