This article from the Kalgoorlie Miner reports on a speech given by the founder of the Salvation Army, General Booth, to a public meeting in Kalgoorlie in 1905. In his speech, General Booth talks about the purpose of the Salvation Army as 'not alone for spiritual worship, but for dealing with the temporal and social miseries of those classes which seemed to have got beyond the pale of philanthropic, religious, and governmental efforts for aid in the work of reform'. Some history and examples of the work of the Salvation Army are included in this report, which shows that the speech was well-received by the audience.
