The Adoption of Children Amendment Act 1980 enabled children over the age of 12 years to retain their original surname if the Judge deemed this to be in their best interests. The amendments also gave the Director responsible for child welfare the ability to supervise children adopted internationally for the first 12 months after their arrival in Australia.
