The State Library of Queensland contains the John Oxley Library on Level 4. The John Oxley Library was opened in 1934 and is responsible for collecting, managing and providing access to material that documents Queensland's history, development and cultural life. The John Oxley Library collects widely and is assisted by the State Library's legal deposit role, which requires publishers, authors and others to deposit a copy of their works with the library.
Some records of the Congregational, Methodist, Presbyterian and Uniting Church out-of-home care institutions were transferred to the John Oxley Library in Brisbane. These records only relate to church administration and operations. There are no individual files of former residents.
The State Library of Queensland also has a large collection of genealogical resources within its Family History Unit. The resources cover records from Queensland, other Australian states and other countries and include census records, immigration and shipping, births, deaths and marriages among other items.
