The Adoption of Children Act 1958 (Act no. 6192) was passed on 30 September 1958 and came into operation on 1 April 1959 (Gov. Gaz. 18 March 1959 p.892). It was “An Act to consolidate the Law relating to the Adoption of Infants.” It was repealed and re-enacted by the Adoption of Children Act 1964 (No.7147) on 1 January 1966. It also extended the rules of succession, which in previous legislation was limited in relation to wider family inheritances and introduced the requirement that the court appoint a person to safeguard the interests of the child in adoption proceedings before the court.
