The Adoptions and Permanency Services is part of Children, Youth and Families, within the Tasmanian Department for Education, Children and Young People. It manages adoptions and runs the Adoption Information Service, as well as the After Care Support Program, which provides support, including records access services, to Tasmanian care leavers.
The After Care Support Program provides assistance for Care Leavers in Tasmania. It assists with records access and family tracing services, provides referrals to other government and community services such as education, health and housing, and provides financial assistance to Care Leavers between the ages of 18 and 24.
The Adoption Information Service was established in 1988 by the Adoption of Children Act 1988. It provides information regarding adoptions to people who were adopted as children as well as to both adoptive parents and birth parents whose children were adopted. It manages an Adoption Information Register which enables those involved in an adoption to obtain and exchange information, whilst respecting each parties wishes regarding privacy and contact. The Adoption Information Service also offers counselling and advice.
