The Child Welfare (Amendment) Act 1967 (27/1967) was ‘An Act relating to proceedings before children’s courts; to make provision for the care of intellectually handicapped children and young persons; for these and other purposes to amend the Child Welfare Act, 1939, as amended by subsequent Acts’. It brought the issue of disability more clearly under the Child Welfare Act. While still very paternalistic, it allowed courts to sentence young offenders as ‘handicapped’ people, made the care of disabled people part of the child welfare system, and in general provided for young disabled people in a way that the welfare system had not before. It was amended in 1969 and in 1973. It was repealed by the Miscellaneous Acts (Community Welfare) Repeal and Amendment Act 1987.
