Details

The files relate to a wide range of matters, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Missions, Settlements, and Reserves, removals of people from land and children from family, marriages, exemptions, education, industries, health (including administration of the Fantome Island Lazaret), welfare, deaths, and complaints received from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Access Conditions

However, most records in this series have restricted access for 100 years in order to protect personal privacy. To access open records, or to apply for access to restricted records, please contact Queensland State Archives.

Records

This series contains records relating to institutions known to have housed members of the Stolen Generation, notably Cherbourg (Barambah), Mapoon Mission, Palm Island Aborigina Settlement, Mitchell River Mission (Kowanyama), Woorabinda, Yarrabah Mission, and smaller numbers of files for other missions/settlements.

The contents of many of these files is not clear from the Queensland State Archives listings, as many of them are titled with the name of the Mission/insitution and little else. The records are likely to be predominantly administrative in nature, however they may contain names of individuals living at the Missions, and as such may be of interest to members of the Stolen Generations. There is also a large number of restricted files within this series that are not publicly listed in the QSA catalogue. These records potentially include the names of individuals in their titles.

The below document contains a list of items in this series that may be of relevance to members of the Stolen Generations and Care Leavers. The items are arranged by the Mission/Institution or theme that they refer to.
