The Department of Families was created on 17 February 2001. Previously known as the Department of Families, Youth and Community Care, following the State general elections on 17 Feb 2001, the Department’s title was changed to the Department of Families. The Department had responsibility for juvenile justice facilities. On 12 February 2004 the Families Department (including the Child Protection Branch) was abolished. Its functions were transferred to two newly-created departments: Communities and Child Safety.
