The Friday Island Lazaret, situated on Friday Island in the Torres Strait, was established in 1892 as a leprosarium for non-European sufferers of leprosy. It was run by the Queensland government and closed in 1907. Remaining patients were moved to Peel Island.
On 27 Oct 1892, Friday Island, Torres Strait, was proclaimed a lazaret under the provisions of the Leprosy Act of 1892. It was established for the treatment of non-European patients. In 1907 Friday Island Lazaret was closed and patients were transferred to a new lazaret for both non-European and European patients on Peel Island, Moreton Bay.
It has not been determined whether children suffering from leprosy were sent to Friday Island.
