The Patient Records Removed from Case Books date from 1894 to 1979. They contain personal information about patients at the Millbrook Rise Psychopathic Hospital and the Royal Derwent Hospital and its predecessors. These records include the names of children.
Closed D75 years
D75 means that records in this series that have final entries less than 75 years old are closed to the general public. People wishing to access these records should contact Mental Health Services which is in the Department of Health and Human Services. Applicants will be required to fill out a Personal Information Protection (PIP) form. Staff at the Tasmanian Archive and Heritage Office may be able to assist you in finding other relevant records.
The records contain personal details, previous medical history, and details of treatment of patients while in Lachlan Park and Millbrook Rise Psychopathic Hospitals. The Tasmanian Archive and Heritage Office website lists the names of patients whose records are on open access because they are more than 75 years old.
Initially patients’ notes were kept in bound case books on the ward. In the 1930s, the notes were removed from these bound case books and placed in separate volumes according to whether the patient was male or female and then discharged or deceased. Later these records were kept in a single alphabetical order.
