The Police Branch of the Office of Superintendent of Police was established in 1931, following the merge of Territory of North Australia and the Territory of Central Australia into the Northern Territory. It was responsible for the administration of police stations and gaols in the Northern Territory, including Her Majesty’s Gaol and Labour Prison, Alice Springs. In 1960 the office of Superintendent of Police was replaced by the Deputy Commissioner of Police.
