These records are held by Tasmanian Archives (2011 - current).
The Prisoners Record Books, dated 1890 to 1962, are from Campbell Street Gaol. They contain each inmate’s physical description and photograph, place and date of birth, religion, standard of education and marital status. There is information about offences and sentences, including the dates and places of sentences served outside Tasmania.
Open
The records from 31 December 1897 to 1 January 1902 are missing.
Following the closure of Campbell Street Gaol in 1961 the records that were kept were transferred to Risdon Prison where a fire destroyed a number of them and damaged the Prison Record Books. This means that the records are too fragile to be viewed in person. However, they have been digitised and are available online.
Tasmanian Archives also holds an index recording names of inmates and the page number of their entry in the Prisoners’ Record Books. A digital copy of this index is available through the following link: https://stors.tas.gov.au/GD65-1-1P043
