Redress for Historical Institutional Abuse, Victorian government

Details

Redress for Historical Institutional Abuse opened on 10 December 2024.  The redress scheme is for people who lived in a Victorian institution as a child for a period of at least 6 months, before 1 January 1990, and experienced physical, psychological or emotional abuse or neglect in the institution.

People found eligible for this redress will receive a payment of up to $20,000, a personal acknowledgement or apology, and up to 20 counselling sessions.

Previous payments from other redress schemes, including the National Redress Scheme for people who have experienced institutional childhood sexual abuse, and payments from civil settlements, will be deducted from the $20,000.

The scheme is managed by the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing, and is expected to close in June 2026.
