The Legion of Mary

The Legion of Mary is a Catholic organisation of lay women whose members give voluntary service to the church. It was founded in Dublin, Ireland, in 1921, and arrived in Australia in 1932. In Victoria, The Legion of Mary ran Myra House in Melbourne and the St Mary’s Hostel for girls in Geelong, both opened in 1945. It also ran the Regina Coeli Hostel for homeless women in North Melbourne from 1939.

Sister Justice was the President of the Legion of Mary in Australia in 1945 and she was also the matron at Myra House, which was located in Kew from 1945 until it moved to the suburb of Malvern in 1954.
