    The Victoria Government Gazette Online Archive has digital copies of the Victorian Government Gazette dating back to 1851, and prior to that notices about the colony of Victoria in the Port Phillip Government Gazette (1844 - July 1851), Port Phillip Government Notices (January - 12 July 1843) and the New South Wales Government Gazette (1836 - 1851). It is published regularly, the general issue of the Victoria Government Gazette is produced weekly, as well as 'periodical' and 'special' issues.

    The Victoria Government Gazette is the government's method of notifying the general public of its decisions and activities. In terms of the history of child welfare and institutions, the Government Gazette includes information about matters such as: orphanages being approved as institutions under child welfare legislation; name changes of institutions; and individuals being authorised by legislation to apprehend neglected children.
