In New South Wales, rescue work usually related to attempts to retrieve the social status of vulnerable women, who were seen as 'fallen', but also related to attempts to protect children from life on the streets. The Sydney Rescue Work Society was the main practitioner, but there were other bodies with the same goal in late 19th century Sydney.
