Library & Archives NT (2019 - )

Government Agency, Records Access Service and Records Holder

Library & Archives NT was formed in 2019 following the merge of the Northern Territory Archives Service (1983 - 2019) and the Northern Territory Library (1980 - 2019). Its organisational goal is to collect, preserve and provide access to historic and contemporary materials relating to the Northern Territory. It holds government records related to the history of the Northern Territory, including records related to child welfare and Aboriginal welfare. It also holds the records of non-government organisations including mission records, and personal records deposited by individuals, as well as a substantial oral history collection.

Access Conditions

Most government records are open for research 30 years after the records were created. Some records may be subject to restrictions due to their sensitive or confidential nature.
Access to non-government and personal records is subject to conditions placed on material by the organisation or person depositing the records. The majority are open access, some require written permission from the depositor.

Please contact the Library & archives NT for information about how to apply for access to closed records. A number of Fact Sheets for researchers are available on the Archives website.
