Australian Government
The Office of the Administrator was re-established under this title in 1931. This occurred when the legislation, which had divided the Territory into two separately administered parts, North and Central, was repealed.
The new legislation, the Northern Territory (Administration) Act 1931 placed the administration in the hands of an Administrator based in Darwin. He was assisted by a Deputy Administrator based in Alice Springs. The Office of the Administrator operated under the control of the Commonwealth Government.
The Office of the Administrator remained after the passing of the Northern Territory (Self Government) Act 1978 but it reported to the Northern Territory Government.
